Family Portrait Photography
Is it time to update the family photos? Expecting a new baby? We began our photography careers doing family portraits and 15 years later we still love documenting these precious moments. Most of our sessions are done either in the comfort of your own home or at an outdoor location in or around Winnipeg but a studio can be arranged if you prefer.
Pro Tips for Planning the Perfect Portrait Session & Frequently Asked Questions
Where should We Shoot?
Anywhere you’d like! Often we meet our clients at a park (Birds Hill Park, King’s Park, Assiniboine Park, etc.) but we also love shooting in Downtown Winnipeg or The Exchange District for a more urban look.
A few other ideas to consider:
The Zoo, Tinkertown, or any other activity based location for a fun and relaxed shoot
Your Home or Family Cabin for a more personalized shoot
Pinawa Dam, Falcon Lake, West Hawk Lake for an adventure shoot
Birds Hill Park, Lester Beach, Grand Beach, Victoria Beach for a Beach shoot
In a studio for a more formal shoot
When Should we Shoot?
Early mornings for young children otherwise 1-2 hours before sunset is ideal for the best lighting.
What to wear?
Matching and co-ordinating are two completely different concepts. We love when couples and families use colour and texture to compliment each other while still remaining individuals. Avoid logo’s at all costs and don’t be afraid to wear bright colours as long as you are complimenting each other nicely. Try to consider the colours of the environment we’re shooting in. If we plan to shoot in a forest then try to compliment the greens and earthy tones that will be present in your photos also.
How Will You get my Kid to Co-operate?
Listen, we get it. You want your little kiddos to look their cutest and be on their best behaviour for your family photos but we’ve found a few simple tricks over the last 15 years of photographing families that is sure to make your session fun and memorable.
Don’t Stress! Kids can sense when you’re anxious and that pressure can confuse them and make them act out. Don’t tell them that you’re going for family photos, tell them you’re going to meet your friends Cheryl & Joel and we’re going to play and have fun.
Save the outfit for when you arrive. If they are being scolded for messing up their outfit or hair before the photos even begin, we’re bound for a meltdown.
Let us play and get to know each other before asking them to smile and look at the camera. We like to start slow with young kids so they have some time to understand what the camera does (sometimes we’ll let them take a few photos of you so they feel involved).
Treats - Okay, every kid is different and if you feel like the only way to get their attention is candy and snacks then so-be-it but we can’t tell you how many times we’ve had to remove candy and gum in photoshop and honestly it doesn’t really solve the problem of keeping your kids engaged. Instead, think interactive and photogenic toys like bubbles, kites, bouncy balls etc. Things that we can do together and include in the photos. Pro Tip: Don’t reveal the treat until we’re shooting.
